The Story

The Australia’s largest Desalination Plant is currently designated for Victoria (between Kilcunda and Wonthaggi) and will ruin kilometres of pristine and stunningly beautiful coastline. The surrounding environment will also be impacted by a sudden influx of people required to dredge up the bay.

 The Damage
The Desalination Project is not justifiable. In a time when protecting the environment to fight against climate change and global warming is necessary, dredging up one of Victoria’s most pristine coastlines appears contradictory and irresponsible.  An Environmental Effects Statement was issued (pp.17 - 23):  http://www.ourwater.vic.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0006/15396/EES-Summary-Brochure.pdf) yet the Desalination Plant is being built regardless of the negative impact on the environment (including the construction of an 85km underground Pipeline linking the Desalination plant to Melbourne’s water supply).
The Alternative Solution
The Victorian Government needs to search for water preservation methods (such as offering free rainwater tanks to all Victorian’s) that DO NOT risk destroying the environment any further and work with the water recourses that Victoria already has. The Victorian Government needs to implement initiatives that minimise water use (for example, follow the Queensland Government’s Model of using significantly less water) and heavily invest in environmentally friendly water initiatives. In addition, the long term effects of drinking and bathing in water that has been tampered with are yet to be discovered.
IT IS STILL NOT TOO LATE TO STOP THIS PROJECT!

This is the exact site of the proposed Desalination Plant.

You can help save Victoria’s Coastline by getting the message out there!
Option 1 and 2 will take you five minutes:
  1. E-mail Victoria’s Premier John Brumby johnbrumby@parliament.vic.gov.au and state that if the Desalination Plant goes ahead he will not get your vote in the next election.
  2. Post your feedback on the Government’s Desalination Project Website: http://www.ourwater.vic.gov.au/programs/desalination/community/feedback/desalination_project_feedback_form
  3. Write to the Hon Peter Garret AM, MP Minister for the Environment, Parliament House, Canberra and ask him to use his Federal influence to stop the Desalination Plant from going ahead.

The work on the Desalination Plant is just beginning; it is still not too late to save the coast.
