Inside/Out
An exhibition of paintings celebrating the novelty and diversity of Australian landscape featured alongside abstract works that reveal the artist’s concern for the decline of the natural environment.
Inside/Out is a contemporary painting exhibition that defies traditional modes of representation. Semi-abstracted Australian landscapes (including compelling scenery of the George Bass coastline currently designated for a desalination plant) are exhibited alongside purely abstract works that boast a lively and upbeat colour palette.
‘Inside/Out’ presents two differing painting approaches by artist Rose Rokicki. Her Landscape Series, titled ‘Out’, aims to capture the splendor and fragility of external environments, such as the Bass Coastline, Phillip Island and the Yarra Ranges, revealing the importance of conserving the Australian environment. The beauty and preciousness of locations currently under scrutiny, such as the Bass Coastline, are presented through large scale canvases that depict stunning landscapes through Rokicki’s insightful and refreshingly unique painting techniques.
Small scale figures featured within expansive landscapes signify the vulnerability of people within a struggling environment. Rose reflects that ‘people are directly linked with the environment, are a part of it, if the environment suffers than inevitably we as a people will be affected’. In other works, Rose depicts the forests of Victoria's Mt Donna Buang through rich browns and ochres suggestive of environmental struggle.
In contrast to ‘Out’, her Abstract Series entitled ‘Inside’ responds to internal feelings of loss and degeneration (in this case the feared degeneration of environment). The obscure and unsettling abstracted shapes, represented through mobile and distinct brushstrokes, as well as the subtle use of materials such as recycled paper and tape, contribute to the vibrancy of the work. The wooden boards, on which the series is painted, create an uninhibited, raw and organic feel, deliberately contrasting with the artists more refined Australian landscapes.
Rokicki has been an artist at the historic Abbotsford Convent Arts and Culture Precinct for the past two years and was awarded by the Golden key Honors Society for completing her contemporary arts degree as part of the top fifteen percent of graduates worldwide. She has exhibited her Australian landscapes at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery as well as on site at the Convent.
